Herman Melville

Herman Melville (1819-1891) foi um dos mais importantes romancistas da literatura norte-americana; foi também contista, ensaísta e poeta, com mais de 30 obras publicadas. Melville, cujo nome qualquer leitor reconhece de «Moby Dick», a história da perseguição à grande baleia branca, nasceu no seio de uma família de grande prestígio, mas com grandes dificuldades económicas, que os pais esconderam a Herman e aos seus sete irmãos. O pai sofria de desequilíbrios emocionais graves e havia na família divergências religiosas. Herman e os irmãos acompanharam os pais para várias cidades americanas sempre que estes tentavam refazer a sua vida, e a sua educação foi feita em diversas escolas. Teve vários trabalhos em escritórios e lojas, e de 1839 a 1844 foi marinheiro embarcado em diversos navios. Nos cinco anos que se seguiram publicou grande parte dos seus livros, inspirados na sua experiência marítima, e viu a crítica e sobretudo o público reconhecer-lhe os méritos. Inicia uma correspondência e amizade profícuas com o escritor Nathaniel Hawthorne e publica a sua obra-prima «Moby Dick» em 1851 (primeiro em Inglaterra e só depois nos Estados Unidos). A partir desses anos, Melville, que casara e planeara viver da escrita, cai no esquecimento do público e até ao fim da vida tem de aceitar diversos trabalhos para sobreviver. Só após a sua morte, e aquando do centenário do seu nascimento, é que a crítica redescobre o autor e o seu génio e Melville passa a integrar o panteão dos grandes nomes das letras universais.
