Brecht was never inclined to see any of his plays as completely finished, and this volume collects some of the most important theatrical projects and fragments that were always to remain ''works in progress''. Offering an invaluable insight into the writer''s working methods and practices, the collection features the famous Fatzer as well as The Bread Store and Judith of Shimoda, along with other texts that have never before been available in English.
Alongside the familiar, ''completed'' plays, Brecht worked on many ideas and plans which he never managed to work up even once for print or stage. In pieces like Fleischhacker, Garbe/Büsching and Jacob Trotalong we see how such projects were abandoned or interrupted or became proving grounds for ideas and techniques. The works collated here span over thirty years and allow the reader to follow Brecht''s creative process as he constantly revised his work to engage with new contexts.
This treasure-trove of new discoveries is also annotated with dramaturgical notes to present readable and useable texts for the theatre.
The volume is edited by Tom Kuhn and Charlotte Ryland, with the translation and dramaturgical edition of each play provided by a team of experienced writers, scholars and translators.

Bertolt Brecht
Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956)
Dramaturgo, poeta, romancista e ensaísta , nasceu em Augsburg, Alemanha, a 10 de fevereiro de 1898.
Em 1917 iniciou o curso de medicina em Munique, mas logo foi convocado pelo exército, indo trabalhar como enfermeiro num hospital militar. Aquele que se iria tornar uma das mais importantes figuras do teatro do século XX, cedo começou a escrever os seus primeiros poemas e cedo se rebelou contra os "falsos padrões" da arte e da vida burguesa, corroídas pela Primeira Guerra. Tal atitude reflete-se já na sua primeira peça, o drama expressionista "Baal", de 1918. Colabora com os diretores Max Reinhardt e Erwin Piscator. Em 1928, faz com Kurt Weill a "Ópera de Três Vinténs". Com a ascensão de Hitler, deixa o país em 1933, e exila-se em países como a Dinamarca e Estados Unidos da América, onde sobrevive à custa de trabalhos para Hollywood. Faz da crítica ao nazismo e à guerra tema de obras como "Mãe coragem e seus filhos" (1939). Dos Estados Unidos, vítima do macartismo, parte em 1947 para a Suíça onde redige o "Pequeno Organon", suma de sua teoria teatral. Volta à Alemanha em 1948, onde funda, no ano seguinte, em Berlim Leste, a companhia Berliner Ensemble.
Bertolt Brecht destacou-se também na poesia, de forte conteúdo social.
Morreu em Berlim, a 14 de agosto 1956.
