Louisa May Alcott

Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) foi uma escritora, contista e poetisa norte-americana que se notabilizou principalmente na literatura juvenil.
Passou a infância com as suas três irmãs, rodeada de destacados intelectuais, tais como Nathaniel Hawthorne e Henry David Thoreau, amigos do seu pai, que era filósofo e professor. Como a personagem Jo March em Mulherzinhas, a jovem Louisa era muito determinada. Começou a escrever muito nova, aos 8 anos, idade com que já revelava a sua imaginação fértil, dando origem a histórias que encenava com as irmãs. As dificuldades económicas da família levaram-na a procurar trabalho, numa época em que havia poucas oportunidades para as mulheres. Foi professora, costureira, governanta e enfermeira durante a Guerra Civil Americana.
Aos 35 anos publicou aquele que viria a ser o seu mais famoso romance, Mulherzinhas, inspirado na sua própria vida familiar. Escreveu mais de 30 livros, entre romances, contos e poesia. Além do marco que deixou na literatura mundial, a escritora foi conhecida também pela sua atividade cívica, nomeadamente pelas posições que assumiu em defesa da abolição da escravatura, e do direito de voto para as mulheres.
