SINOPSE
A quiet village in Normandy, 1932. Ludo is ten years old and lives with his uncle, a kindly, eccentric creator of elaborate kites. One day, sitting in a strawberry field, Ludo meets the beautiful young Polish aristocrat Lila. And so begins Ludo's lifelong adventure of love and longing for Lila, who only begins to return his feelings just as Europe descends into the devastation of World War 2.
After Poland and France fall, Lila and Ludo are separated. Ludo's friends in the village must find their own ways of resisting: the local restaurateur who is dedicated above all to France's haute cuisine, a Jewish brothel madam who sleeps with her unwitting enemies and Ludo, who cycles past the Nazis every day, passing on messages for the French Resistance - thinking always of Lila.

SOBRE O AUTOR
Romain Gary
Romain Gary nasceu em 1914 em Vilnius, na Lituânia (então Polónia). Judeu de origem russa, emigrou com a sua mãe para Nice em 1928. Em 1940 junta-se ao general de Gaulle e às forças livres francesas em Londres e combate como navegador da esquadrilha «Lorraine» até ao final da guerra. Ferido, recebe a condecoração suprema dos combatentes franceses, Compagnon de la Libération e foi um dos poucos sobreviventes dos duzentos homens da esquadrilha. O êxito dos seus primeiros romances, Educação Europeia e As Raízes do Céu (Prémio Goncourt 1956) tornaram-no imediatamente um escritor famoso em todo o mundo. Ocupou vários postos diplomáticos na Europa e nos EUA. Em 1975, escrevendo sob o pseudónimo Émile Ajar, ganhou de novo o Prémio Goncourt (caso «impossível» na história do prémio) com Uma Vida à Sua Frente. Gary suicidou-se em 1980, pouco mais de um ano depois do suicídio da sua ex-mulher Jean Seberg. Deixou escrito um pequeno opúsculo intitulado Vida e Morte de Émile Ajar, texto extraordinário onde revelou a «mistificação» Ajar.
