Czeslaw Milosz
PRÉMIO NOBEL DA LITERATURA 1980
Czeslaw Milosz (Seteiniai, 1911 – Cracóvia, 2004) é considerado um dos maiores poetas de sempre e um dos mais influentes intelectuais europeus do século xx.
Nascido na Lituânia ainda sob o império do Czar da Rússia, muda-se com a família para Vilna, na Polónia. Encontra-se em Varsóvia durante a ocupação nazi da cidade, em 1939, publicando a sua poesia em círculos literários clandestinos.
Sobrevive à Segunda Guerra Mundial, testemunhando a devastação da cidade e do seu país. Em 1951, dissidente do novo regime comunista polaco, obtém exílio político em Paris. Remonta a este período a publicação de dois dos mais notáveis e influentes volumes de ensaios da sua vasta obra: A Mente Aprisonada (Ed. Cavalo de Ferro, 2018) e Native Realm. Em 1969, emigra para os Estados Unidos, onde, um ano mais tarde, aceita o convite para lecionar em Berkeley, na Califórnia.
Recebeu inúmeras distinções, entre as quais se contam, em 1978, o importante Prémio Internacional de Literatura Neustadt e, dois anos mais tarde, o Prémio Nobel de Literatura, atribuído pela intransigente clarividência com que expôs a vulnerável condição do homem num mundo de graves conflitos.
