ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Emmanuel Lévinas

Emmanuel Lévinas (Kaunas, January 12, 1906 – Paris, December 25, 1995) was a French philosopher born into a Jewish family in Lithuania.
Heavily influenced by the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl, whose work he translated, as well as by the works of Martin Heidegger, Franz Rosenzweig, and Monsieur Chouchani, Lévinas's thought starts from the idea that Ethics, and not Ontology, is the first Philosophy. It is in the human face-to-face encounter that all meaning erupts. Before the face of the Other, the subject discovers himself to be responsible, and the Infinite comes to his attention.
