Georges Bataille 1897-1962) foi um escritor, filósofo, ensaísta e crítico francês. Entre os episódios mais marcantes da sua vida, encontra-se a mobilização para a Primeira Guerra Mundial, a adesão ao catolicismo e subsequente perda de fé, a experiência da psicanálise e o contacto com o movimento surrealista, de que posteriormente se veio a desvincular, o envolvimento com o círculo comunista democrático ou a luta contra o fascismo. A sua obra foi escrita sob o signo do excesso, do sagrado, da transgressão e do erotismo.
