SYNOPSIS
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was an Irish poet, dramatist, writer and initiate, and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. He was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival, and along with Lady Gregory founded the Abbey Theatre, serving as its chief during its early years. He was awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize in Literature, and later served two terms as a Senator of the Irish Free State.
Considered one of the key English-language poets, Yates was a Symbolist, using allusive imagery and symbolic structures throughout his career. He chose words and assembled them so that, in addition to a particular meaning, they suggest abstract thoughts that may seem more significant and resonant. His use of symbols is usually something physical that is both itself and a suggestion of other, perhaps immaterial, timeless qualities.
The Yeats’ short essayOur Need for Religious Sincerity, which today we propose to our readers, was published in 1926 in the magazineThe Criterion. Of it Yeats wrote:«The Irish periodical, which has hitherto published my occasional comments on Irish events, explained that this essay would endanger its existence. I have therefore sought publication elsewhere». It is, in fact, a ruthless and biting criticism of the hypocrisy and false moralism of Irish society of that time and an exhortation to sincerity and religious freedom.
According to Yeats,«Christianity must meet to-day not the criticism as its ecclesiastics seem to imagine of the School of Voltaire, but of that out of which Christianity itself in part arose, the School of Plato, and there is less occasion for passion».

W. B. Yeats
Em Dublin, no dia 13 de junho de 1865, nasce William Butler Yeats, um dos maiores poetas de língua inglesa do século XX, a quem foi atribuído o Prémio Nobel da Literatura em 1923.
Quando tem apenas dois anos, os seus pais mudam-se para Londres, mas são as férias que passa na Irlanda que William guardará como recordação de infância.
Em 1880, a família Yeats regressa a Dublin, onde William termina o liceu. No ano de 1883, ingressa na Metropolitan School of Art, começando a publicar os seus primeiros textos na "Dublin University Review".
A família Yeats volta a mudar-se para Londres em 1887, e aí William inicia a sua carreira de escritor profissional. Junta-se à Sociedade Teosófica e rapidamente se integra na vida literária de Londres, fazendo amizade com William Morris e W.E. Henley, sendo também cofundador do Rhymers’ Club.
Em 1889, Yeats conhece Maud Gonne, uma rebelde patriota irlandesa. A paixão não correspondida que nutre por Maud leva-o a apoiar a causa nacionalista irlandesa. A morte, em 1891, do líder irlandês Charles Stewart Parnell desmotiva a crença de Yeats na causa nacionalista, levando-o a procurar preencher esse vazio com literatura, arte, poesia, drama e lendas ("The Celtic Twilight").
Em 1899, William pede Maud em casamento, mas esta declina. O escritor entrega-se então à escrita, acreditando que a literatura poderia engendrar uma unidade nacional capaz de transfigurar a Irlanda. No mesmo ano é inaugurado o "Irish Literacy Theatre" - que Yeats criara entretanto -, com a sua peça "The Countess Cathleen".
Ao longo da sua vida, W.B. Yeats publica diversos volumes de poesia, que refletem sempre a sua preocupação com a cultura, a história e a tradição do seu país.
No ano de 1913 Yeats passa alguns meses em Sussex, onde o poeta americano Ezra Pound é seu secretário. Quatro anos mais tarde, casa com George Hyde-Lees, de quem tem uma filha e um filho.
Em 1922, com a fundação do "Irish Free State", Yeats aceita o convite para o Senado Irlandês, onde trabalhou durante seis anos.
William Yeats veio a morrer em Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, no dia 28 de janeiro de 1939, durante uma viagem a França, onde é enterrado. Devido à Segunda Grande Guerra, só em 1948 o seu corpo é transferido para a Irlanda.
