Ricardo Jorge Pereira Barreto nasceu em Braga, a 19 de Maio de 1980. Licenciou-se em Desporto na FCDEF - UP, com especialização em Alto Rendimento - Futebol, em 2003 (classificação de 20 valores na sua tese de licenciatura, intitulada O Problematizar de Dois Princípios de Jogo Fundamentais no Acesso ao Rendimento Superior do Futebol: o «Pressing» e a «Posse de Bola». A equipa sénior do FC Porto, um estudo de caso). Paralelamente à sua formação académica, jogou futebol e exerceu funções técnicas no Boavista FC. Realizou o curso de treinadores da UEFA na Scottish FA. Estagiou em vários clubes, designadamente no Manchester United.
