Kieron Gillen teve uma longa e extensa carreira como escritor e jornalista antes de se lançar nos comics. Foi o primeiro jornalista especializado em videojogos a receber um prémio da Periodical Publishers Association. Em 2010, Gillen anunciou no site Rock, Paper, Shotgun que iria deixar o jornalismo a tempo inteiro para se dedicar à sua carreira como escritor de comics.
Gillen tinha escrito histórias curtas para várias publicações inglesas com o desenhador Jamie McKelvin, que se tornaria no seu grande colaborador e que desenharia as duas séries independentes que ele escreveu, Phonogram e The Wicked + The Divine.
Foi o trabalho em Phonogram que lhe valeu as primeiras encomendas na Marvel. Gillen já escreveu para alguns dos principais títulos da Casa das Ideias, incluindo Thor, Uncanny X-Men, Invincible Iron Man e muitas outras. Mas The Wicked + The Divine continua a ser a sua criação com mais sucesso e aquela em que ele junta as suas grandes paixões, música pop, comics e fantasia.
