José M. Mendes

Natural de Figueiró da Serra, onde nasceu a 4 de maio de 1936, frequentou os seminários do Fundão e da Guarda entre 1948 e 1956. Em 1957, ingressou na Empresa de Cimentos de Leiria, do Grupo Champalimaud, tendo sido secretário pessoal de António Champalimaud entre 1969 e 1973, no México e em França. Após o 25 de Abril, exerceu funções nos Serviços Jurídicos da Cimpor e foi nomeado solicitador em 1976.
Colaborou durante décadas com o jornal Notícias de Gouveia e integrou a fiscalização da EPNC. Doutorou-se em 2015 em História. Autor de várias obras, recebeu em 2024 um prémio da Câmara Municipal de Gouveia. Publica agora a obra Os Descobrimentos Portugueses e a Instituição do Padroado, com a Oficina da Escrita.
