Daniel Deronda, by George Eliot, is a compelling exploration of identity, heritage, and societal expectations. The story follows Daniel, a young man who discovers he is of Jewish descent, a revelation that challenges his aristocratic upbringing. As Daniel navigates his dual identity, he forms deep connections with those around him, including the enigmatic Gwendolen, whose own story of societal expectations and class divides intertwines with his. Through intricate character development and thoughtful social commentary, Eliot masterfully examines the complexities of love, family, and the search for self-identity in Victorian England.
