The evangelical movement began in the revivals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, known in America as the Great Awakenings. A populist rebellion against the established churches, it became the dominant religious force in the country.
During the nineteenth century white evangelicals split apart, first North versus South, and then, modernist versus fundamentalist. After World War II, Billy Graham attracted enormous crowds and tried to gather all Protestants under his big tent, but the civil rights movement and the social revolution of the sixties drove them apart again. By the 1980s Jerry Falwell and other southern televangelists, such as Pat Robertson, had formed the Christian right. Protesting abortion and gay rights, they led the South into the Republican Party, and for thirty-five years they were the sole voice of evangelicals to be heard nationally. Eventually a younger generation proposed a broader agenda of issues, such as climate change, gender equality, and immigration reform.
Evangelicals now constitute twenty-five percent of the American population, but they are no longer monolithic in their politics. They range from Tea Party supporters to social reformers. Still, with the decline of religious faith generally, FitzGerald suggests that evangelical churches must embrace ethnic minorities if they are to survive. "A well-written, thought-provoking, and deeply researched history that is impressive for its scope and level of detail" (The Wall Street Journal). Her "brilliant book could not have been more timely, more well-researched, more well-written, or more necessary" (The American Scholar).

F. Scott Fitzgerald
Escritor norte-americano nascido a 24 de setembro de 1896, em St. Paul, no estado do Minnesota, e falecido a 21 de dezembro de 1940. Aos 13 anos, escreveu The Mystery of the Raymond Mortgage, uma história sobre um detetive que foi publicada no jornal da escola que frequentava. Depois de ter passado por uma escola católica, ingressou, em 1913, na Universidade de Princeton, mas apostou mais no desenvolvimento das suas aptidões literárias do que a estudar as matérias do seu curso. Em 1917, por exemplo, escreveu argumentos e letras para espetáculos musicais e textos humorísticos para revistas. Como constatou que não ia conseguir terminar o curso, ainda em 1917 alistou-se no exército, onde chegou a segundo-tenente. Na altura, os Estados Unidos da América estavam envolvidos na Primeira Guerra Mundial e Fitzgerald estava convencido que ia morrer em combate. Por isso, escreveu a toda a pressa o romance The Romantic Egoist. No ano seguinte, foi trabalhar para Nova Iorque e, apesar de bem sucedido no mundo da publicidade, Fitzgerald deixou o emprego em 1919 para se dedicar ao romance This Side of Paradise, onde usou material de The Romantic Egoist. No mesmo ano, começou a escrever artigos para revistas populares. Para poder ganhar mais dinheiro deixou a escrita de romances e começou a escrever histórias de ficção para jornais. As suas histórias de amor foram consideradas inovadoras e refrescantes. Em 1920, finalmente publicou This Side of Paradise, com o qual alcançou um tremendo sucesso. Logo no ano seguinte, publicou o seu segundo romance, The Beautiful and Damned. Francis Scott Fitzgerald e sua mulher entraram, entretanto, numa fase de grandes luxos participando em inúmeras festas, gastando muito dinheiro e acumulando dívidas. Em 1924, o romancista mudou-se para França, onde escreveu um dos seus livros mais marcantes, The Great Gatsby (O Grande Gatsby), que apesar de ter recebido boas críticas foi um fracasso a nível de vendas. Este romance viria a ser adaptado ao teatro e, posteriormente, ao cinema, ganhando outra visibilidade. A versão cinematográfica mais conhecida é a de 1974, realizada por Jack Clayton, tendo Robert Redford por protagonista. Fitzgerald regressou aos Estados Unidos da América em 1931, tendo tentado escrever alguns argumentos para filmes. Contudo, só conseguiu terminar um, Three Comrades, em 1938. Logo depois, foi despedido devido aos seus problemas de alcoolismo. Em 1939, começou a escrever o romance The Love of The Last Tycoon, que nunca terminaria porque morreu vítima de ataque cardíaco a 21 de dezembro de 1940. No entanto, baseado no que já deixara escrito, foi realizado, em 1976, o filme The Last Tycoon. Sob a direção de Elia Kazan estiveram os atores Robert de Niro, Robert Mitchum e Jack Nicholson. F. Scott Fitzgerald escreveu também alguns contos, entre os quais Babylon Revisited, que inspirou o filme The Last Time I Saw Paris (Última Vez Que Vi Paris), com Elizabeth Taylor.
