Teve a ideia para escrever as inesquecíveis aventuras de Harry, Ron e Hermione num comboio que viajava atrasado em 1990, e foi nessa altura que a autora concebeu as linhas gerais da série e depois escreveu os sete livros que a compõem, tendo sido o primeiro, Harry Potter e a Pedra Filosofal, publicado no Reino Unido em 1997. A série demorou mais dez anos a ser completada e foi concluída em 2007, com a publicação de Harry Potter e os Talismãs da Morte. É também autora de três livros cujas receitas revertem a favor de instituições de caridade: O Quidditch através dos Tempos, Monstros Fantásticos e Onde Encontrá-los (a favor da Comic Relief e da Lumos) e Os Contos de Beedle, o Bardo (a favor da Lumos). J.K. Rowling colaborou na escrita da peça de teatro Harry Potter e a Criança Amaldiçoada - Partes 1 e 2, que deu continuidade à história de Harry, cujo guião foi publicado em livro.
