ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Cesare Pavese

Cesare Pavese was born in 1908 in the small Italian village of Santo Stefano Belbo. In 1927 he enrolled in the Faculty of Letters at the University of Turin and shortly afterwards began his work writing and translating some of the most important English-language authors of the 20th century, including John Steinbeck, William Faulkner and James Joyce. His first book of poetry, Working is tiring., revealed in 1936. An anti-fascist fighter, he was arrested and sentenced to exile, joining the Communist Party after the war. In 1947 he published Dialogues with Leucò and in 1949 The Beautiful Summer, a book that would be awarded the Strega Prize in 1950. In that same year, and shortly after the release of what is considered his most successful novel, The Moon and the BonfiresPavese commits suicide in a hotel room in Turin.
