Friedrich Hölderlin
Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin was born in Lauffen, Germany, on March 20, 1770. One of the greatest Romantic poets in the German language, Hölderlin befriended leading figures of his time, Schelling and Hegel, with whom he would later co-author the celebrated work... The oldest program of German idealismIn his Hyperion, or the Hermit of Greece (1797-1799), an epistolary novel in two volumes, and in its Poems (1826), left a profound reflection on exile, the sublime and the natural world, incorporating into the German language the syntax of classical Greek and its complex mythology. Marked by mental disturbance from an early age, Hölderlin would spend the end of his life in seclusion in the famous Tübingen Tower, where he produced his "poems of madness," until his death there on June 7, 1843.
