ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lev Tolstoi

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was born in Russia into a noble family. Orphaned at an early age, he chose to pursue a military career, later using his experiences on the battlefield to depict war realistically in his novels.

In 1856, he left the army and traveled through Europe to study Pedagogy. Returning to Russia, he devoted himself to writing, later publishing War and Peace (1865-69) and Anna Karenina (1875-77), still considered two of the best novels ever.
