Jane Austen's most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice is set in late-eighteenth-century England and brings together families of differing social classes, binding them in tales of love, reputation and virtue. The Bennetts are looking for husbands for their daughters, in particular wealthy young bachelors who will be able to provide and support. While portraying life in the genteel rural society of the day, the story focuses on the initial misunderstandings and later enlightenment between Elizabeth Bennett (whose liveliness and quick wit have often attracted readers) and the haughty Mr Darcy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jane Austen

One of the greatest figures in English literature, Jane Austen (1775-1817) marked the transition from Neoclassicism to Romanticism. Even as a child, she wrote novels for her family, some of which were published in... Love and Friendship and Other Early Works (1922). In this author's literary production, two periods are considered: from 1796 to 1798, in which she wrote Sense and Sensibility (Sensitivity and Common Senseand Pride and Prejudice (Pride and Prejudice), published in 1811 and 1813, respectively; and from 1811 onwards, with the writing of Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816) and Persuasion (Persuasion, 1818).
