Retired researcher from the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon. The Meanings of Empire – The National Question and the Colonial Question in the Crisis of the Portuguese Old Regime (Porto, Afrontamento, 1993); The African Empire, 1825 – 1890 (coordinator, with Jill Dias), (Lisbon, Editorial Estampa, 1998); Old Brazil, New Africas – Portugal and the Empire, 1808 – 1975 (Porto, Afrontamento, 2000); The Theft of Souls – Salazar, the Church and Totalitarianism, 1930 – 1939 (Lisbon, Dom Quixote, 2006); and The Colonial Question in Parliament, 1821–1910 (Lisbon, Assembly of the Republic and Dom Quixote, 2008). He also collaborated extensively on volume IV of History of Portuguese Expansion, directed by Francisco Bettencourt and Kirti Chauduri (Lisbon, Círculo de Leitores, 1998). She published in Temas e Debates. Against the Wind – Portugal, the Empire and the Anti-Colonial Tide (1945 – 1960) in 2017, The Disasters of War – Portugal and the Revolts in Angola (1961: January to April) in 2021 and On the Razor's Edge – Portugal and the Defense of the Empire (1961: April to November), in 2023.
