ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Philip Roth

Philip Roth was born in Newark, New Jersey, on March 19, 1933. The second child of second-generation Americans, Beth and Herman Roth, Roth grew up in the predominantly Jewish community of Weequahic, a neighborhood to which he would often return in his writing. After completing high school at Weequahic Secondary School In 1950, she attended Bucknell University in Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago, where she received a scholarship to complete her master's degree in English Literature.
In 1959, Roth published Goodbye, Columbus – a collection that brings together a novella and five short stories – a work for which he received the National Book PrizeTen years later, his fourth novel, The Portnoy ComplexThis brought Roth critical and commercial success, firmly establishing his reputation as one of America's finest young writers. Roth is the author of thirty-one books, including those that followed the fates of Nathan Zuckerman and an imaginary narrator named Philip Roth, through which he explored, giving them voice, the complexities of the American experience in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Roth's enduring contribution to literature was widely recognized throughout his life, both in the United States and abroad. Among other awards, he received the Prize Pulitzerthe Man Booker International Prize, was a two-time winner of National Book Critics Circle Award and of National Book PrizeHe was honored with the National Medal of Arts and the National Humanities Medal by Presidents Clinton and Obama, respectively.
Philip Roth died on May 22, 2018, at the age of eighty-five, having ended his writing career six years earlier.
