André Franquin was born on January 3, 1924 in Etterbeek (Belgium) and died on January 5, 1997 in Saint-Laurent-du-Var (France).
A prolific comic book artist, he became known primarily for his series Spirou and Fantasio, Gaston, Modesto and Pompom and Black Ideas; also being the creator of the prodigious Marsupilami, an imaginary animal.
In 1955, amidst a dispute with Charles Dupuis, he joined the magazine. Tintin and creates the series Modesto and Pompom, returning however to Dupuis Editions in 1959.
In the late 1950s, and simply to liven up the magazine. Spirou, creates, together with Yvan Delporte, the character Gaston Lagaffe, a character who, however, given his resounding success, would soon have his own series. Around this time, to cope with the enormous workload, Franquin created his own studio and surrounded himself with promising young writers, including Greg, Roba, and Jidéhem.
Franquin is one of the pillars of Franco-Belgian comics and of the first generation of the Marcinelle School. He became known for the quality of his drawing, particularly for the way he managed to convey movement, the expressiveness he gave to his characters and the richness of his settings, as well as for the inventiveness of his humor, often sprinkled with touches of poetry.
