ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tomas Tranströmer

2011 Nobel Prize in Literature

Tomas Tranströmer was born on April 15, 1931, in Stockholm, the city where he also graduated in Psychology in 1956. He began writing poetry at a very young age and published his first poems in 1954. His poetry is inspired by Western metaphysics, the Japanese tradition of haiku, and great classical works that reflect on and question the human condition, death, and memory. To these themes, the poet adds multiple references to his personal life, his love of music and travel, botany, entomology, and other subjects.

In 1990, Tomas Tranströmer suffered a stroke, which has left him unable to speak ever since. However, he has not lost his ability to write. Some of his books were published after this health problem.

Throughout his career, he received numerous awards, including: the Bonnier Poetry Prize, the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, the Oevalids Prize, the Petrarca Prize, the International Poetry Forum Prize, and the Griffin Prize. In 2011, the Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize in Literature. His work has been translated worldwide. He died on March 26, 2015.
