ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Norman Mailer

Norman Mailer was born in 1923 in Long Branch, New Jersey, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating with a degree in engineering from Harvard, he served during the war in the Philippines; these were the years that originated... The Naked and the Dead (1948), considered by many to be his greatest work. After the war, he became a novelist, journalist, and film director. In 1955, he founded, with other intellectuals, the dissenting newspaper The Voice of the Village, for years indispensable to the New York cultural scene. He was the editor of Dissent, between 1952 and 1963, and president of American Center PEN From 1984 to 1986. An author with the most varied, controversial, and brilliant literary career in the United States literary scene, he would publish more than thirty titles, including The Armies of the Night (1968), for which he obtained a National Book Prize and a Pulitzerand The Executioner's Song (1980), which distinguished him with a second PulitzerNorman Mailer in 2007, at the age of eighty-four. Hitler's Ghost, published by Dom Quixote, was his last novel.
