ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Benjamin Ferencz

Benjamin Ferencz is the last surviving prosecutor from the Nuremberg Trials and one of the founders of the International Criminal Court. He was born in Transylvania in 1920 into a Jewish family, emigrated to New York as a child, and lived in... Hell's KitchenHe studied at Harvard Law School on a scholarship and then enlisted in the army. He participated in the Normandy landings and fought in several battles (receiving 5 decorations), and was transferred to the war crimes unit. As a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Military Tribunal, he exposed the crimes of one of the SS death squads. He negotiated compensation for Holocaust survivors. In 2014 he was awarded the Medal of Freedom (awarded to Nelson Mandela); in 2018 Netflix produced a documentary about his life; in 2019, his wife, Gertrude, with whom he was married for over 70 years, died.
