ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ralph Ellison

Ralph Ellison was born in Oklahoma City (USA) in 1914. He studied music at the Tuskegee Institute, moved to New York in 1936, and lived in Harlem until his death in 1994. He was 80 years old.
Invisible ManHis debut novel, and the only one published during the author's lifetime, was honored with the prestigious National Book Award, simultaneously establishing him as one of the most important and influential novelists of the 20th century. His second novel, Juneteenth, it would only be published posthumously. He did, however, write numerous essays and short stories, such as Shadow and Act, Heading to the Territory and Flying Home and Other Stories.
In 1975, he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and ten years later, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
