ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stéphane Hessel

He was born at the beginning of the Russian Revolution, but instead of rebellion, he preferred the path of diplomacy and international organizations.
His experience in the Second World War - during which he escaped from concentration camps twice - made him a staunch globalist and European.
Convinced of the need for unity against new catastrophes and believing in the necessity of an international organization, he contributed to the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. "Perhaps the most ambitious period of my life, with the pressing feeling of working for the future and not for eternity."
A pioneer of the UN, French ambassador, linked to Foreign Affairs and later to the United Nations Development Programme, Stéphane Hessel embodies a kind of "global civic engagement" that leads him to alternately engage in the fight for human rights, the rights of undocumented immigrants and the homeless, the fight against inequality, and even the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A revered enthusiast, present on all fronts, Stéphane Hessel makes ecology one of the main challenges of the 21st century and, optimistic as he is, believes that Nature is "rich in multiple tricks," capable of thwarting all the traps set by its creatures.
Stéphane Hessel calls for a global organization for development and urges new generations to resist the scandals that surround them and fight them with all their energy.
