Funchal - Architectural Singularities, written by architect and researcher Rui Campos Matos, is a bilingual (Portuguese and English) book and cultural itinerary dedicated to rescuing and valuing the visual and urban identity of the Madeiran capital through its most unusual built details. Moving away from the rigidity of a purely technical inventory, the work functions as a practical field guide that invites residents and visitors to awaken their gaze to a rich variety of colors, textures, and construction solutions that often go unnoticed in daily life.

Throughout its pages and itineraries, the author demonstrates how morphologies and aesthetic influences brought from various European cultural contexts were wisely reinterpreted and adapted to the steep orography, light, and microclimate of the island. Among the mapped singularities, the highlights include the emblematic 19th-century casinhas de prazer (pleasure houses) influenced by the British community, the ship-watching towers, and the cantilevered bread ovens integrated into the facades of the old town area of Santa Maria do Calhau.
