Paula Rego is one of the most prominent names in European art. Born in Portugal in 1935, she studied at Slade School of Fine Arts, in London, where he resided at the time of his death at age 87, on June 6, 2022.
She was the first Associate Artist of National Gallery and received the title of Doctor. honoris causa She graduated from the universities of St. Andrews, East Anglia, Rhode Island School of Design, The London Institute, Oxford, Roehampton, and Cambridge. A painter of “stories,” Paula Rego’s characters play a variety of roles and portray unsettling tensions beneath the surface. Her work—large pastel paintings, sharply drawn etchings, and elaborate lithographs—expresses an extraordinary diversity of emotions and experiences.
