ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gerrit Kouwenaar

Gerrit Kouwenaar (1923-2014) is one of the giants of post-war Dutch literature. A poet, writer, journalist, and translator, during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, he clandestinely published his first poems and collaborated with resistance newspapers and magazines. In the early post-war years, he was the art editor of the communist newspaper. De WaarheidHe was part of the literary movement. Vijftigers ('Fifty Years'), associated with the artistic collective Cobra, who promoted the modernization of Dutch poetry from 1948 onwards, and became one of the most important poets of his country. His work has been awarded the main literary prizes in the Netherlands, including the Prize P.C. Hooft and the Dutch Literature Prize for his body of work.
Published in 1950, when Kouwenaar was only 26 years old, Drop, Bomb! It was his first work of prose and is partly inspired by his experiences under Nazi occupation.
