ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Immanuel Kant

Immanuel Kant was born in 1724 in Königsberg, where he died in 1804. He led a calm, sober life, dedicated to study and teaching. Deeply imbued with the ideals of the Enlightenment, Kant professed a profound sympathy for the ideals of American Independence and the French Revolution. He was a staunch pacifist, anti-militarist, and averse to any form of exclusivist patriotism. Kant's works are usually divided into three periods, commonly referred to as pre-critical, critical, and post-critical. His best-known and most influential works were written in the second period, including the Metaphysics of Morals.
