Luigi Pirandello

Nobel Prize in Literature 1934

Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936), Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934, was born in Agrigento, Sicily, later moving to Rome, where he began his literary career.
He is the author of a vast and varied body of work, centered on the theme of identity and a unique worldview, strongly ironic and satirical.
He wrote a large number of novels, collected under the title of Novelle per un anno (a total of 15 volumes from 1922 to 1937); seven novels, among which is the celebrated The late Mattia Pascal (1904); and numerous theatrical pieces, gathered under the programmatic title Nude Mask (1918-1937) and among which are included I know Personaggi in Cerca d'autore (1921) and This question will be if you recite the soggeto (1930).
Pirandello's work is one of the most representative of modern literature and was a decisive influence on authors such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, Jean Genet, and Eugene O'Neill.
