With themes of ambition, moral compromise, and the American Dream, the story follows his journey as he seeks a fresh start in a city full of opportunities. At the novel's start, Cowperwood, accompanied by his mistress Aileen, leaves behind his tarnished past in Philadelphia and arrives in Chicago, ready to capitalize on the rapid growth and potential of the city. His sharp business acumen and charismatic nature quickly allow him to gain the attention of influential figures in the financial world, setting the stage for his ambition to dominate the city's street-railway system. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Theodore Dreiser
