This book focuses on the construction of hegemonic masculinity as well as its representations in literature, culture, and film. Although white heterosexual masculinity continues to be the dominant model, it remains, paradoxically, largely invisible in gender terms. While the first three chapters thus offer introductory theoretical perspectives on the latest research on white masculinities, the following chapters concentrate on applying masculinity theory to the analysis of both social constructions and cultural (i.e. literary and film) representations of men’s emotions (with a special focus on new fatherhood models), friendships between men, as well as gender-based violence.

Josep M. Armengol

Josep M. Armengol é doutorado em Filologia Inglesa pela Universidade de Barcelona e fez a sua investigação de pós-doutoramento no Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities da Universidade Stony Brook (EUA).
Atualmente, é responsável pelo primeiro mestrado de Espanha em Estudos sobre Masculinidades, na Universidade de Castilla-La Mancha, e é editor da revista americana Men and Masculinities.
Colabora em meios de comunicação espanhóis e internacionais como comentador de questões de género e masculinidades.
É autor das monografias Richard Ford and the Fiction of Masculinities e Masculinities in Black and White e coordenou os livros La masculinidad a debate (2008), Masculinidades alternativas en el mundo de hoy (2014), Masculinities and Literary Studies (2017) e Aging Masculinities in Contemporary U.S. Fiction (2021).
