Mary Jo Putney nasceu em Nova Iorque, vítima de um vício pela leitura para o qual se desconhece ainda a cura. Após uma licenciatura em Literatura Inglesa e também em Design Industrial pela Universidade de Syracuse, chegou a trabalhar na área do design antes de se dedicar à escrita.
