ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Rex Stout
Rex Stout nasceu a 1 de dezembro de 1886 na cidade americana de Noblesville, Indiana. Após uma breve passagem pela Universidade do Kansas, alista-se na Marinha em 1906 e durante dois anos serve a bordo do iate Mayflower, do Presidente Roosevelt, como subtenente. Em 1916 cria um sistema bancário escolar que seria implementado em mais de quatrocentos estabelecimentos de ensino e que lhe garantiu lucros confortáveis, mas em 1927 abandona os negócios e passa a dedicar-se inteiramente à escrita. Publica três romances, que obtiveram críticas favoráveis, mas é com a sua primeira obra policial que alcança o reconhecimento do grande público: Picada Mortal surgiu em 1934 e com ela surgiu a personagem de Nero Wolfe, detetive excêntrico, amante de boa comida e de belas orquídeas, que, juntamente com o jovem assistente Archie Goodwin, viria a protagonizar dezenas de histórias. Em 1959, Rex Stout recebeu a distinção de Grande Mestre pela Mystery Writers of America. Morreu a 27 de outubro de 1975, em Danbury, no Connecticut, cerca de um mês após a publicação do seu último romance, Um Caso Familiar.
