Lima Barreto

Lima Barreto [1881–1922], the son of mestizo parents and the grandson of slaves, was a civil servant and collaborated in several newspapers. Between chronicles (Os Bruzundangas), short stories ("The man who knew Javanese") and novels (Recordações do Escrivão Isaías Caminha, Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma, Vida e Morte de J. M. Gonzaga de Sá), he wrote about race, social inequalities and the life of Rio de Janeiro in the early years of the twentieth century.
