The story opens in 1871, seven years after the events of the previous book, where George and Douglas Abernathy are finding that their android business is not enjoying the same success as it once did. A possible solution arrives in the form of Nancy Sullivan: the family's enigmatic new maid. Unbeknown to Nancy, George uses her as the model for a 'maid of all work' for the mass market, which he believes will reignite consumer interest.

Smitten by Nancy, Douglas remodels his brother's prototype maid to create Jezelle, an electric-powered girl capable of feeling every human emotion - including love. With anti-android sentiment brewing, Douglas believes Jezelle could be the key to bridging the gap between humans and androids.

While George and Nancy grow closer, Douglas and Jezelle develop a father-daughter bond - with Nancy and Jezelle remaining unaware of one another's existence. Jezelle longs to explore the world beyond her room, but Douglas is reluctant to grant his 'ward' her freedom for fear of what Nancy will think. Younger sister Molly is on hand to provide support and guidance, while dealing with her own troubles about her uncertain future with fiancé Arthur.

The various threads woven throughout the story, and the series as a whole, come together in an action-packed finale, where all of the characters' secrets are forced into the open and everything the family hold dear is threatened.
