ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Quino

Argentine comic book author, caricaturist and illustrator, Quino, pseudonym of Joaquín Salvador Lavado (Mendoza, Argentina, July 17, 1932 - September 30, 2020), was the son of Spanish immigrants originally from Fuengirola (Málaga).
After finishing his studies in Fine Arts, Quino tried his luck as a draftsman in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, when he was 18 years old. Unable to find work, he returned home and created various advertising posters in his early years of work, until he moved to Buenos Aires in 1954, where his work would gradually gain proper recognition.
He began working as an illustrator for titles as diverse as Revivato, Esto Es, What, Seven Days, Aunt Vicenta, Vea and LeaAmong other things, he produced a large number of caricatures. In his early works, it is noticeable that he was influenced by the artistic style of Walt Disney and the Argentinian artist Guillermo Divito.
Quino's World, the title of his first book, was published in 1963.
In 1964, her emblematic character, Mafalda, the rebellious one, emerged. This comic strip series, published in newspapers, was initially conceived for an advertising campaign for household appliances, but was ultimately rejected. Initially, Mafalda was published in the humor supplement of the magazine. Leoplan, with three stripes, and began to appear regularly in Primera Plana (1964), then in The World (1965) and finally in Seven Days (1967), ending in 1973, despite the great success achieved in several countries. This decision was related to the author's desire to dedicate himself entirely to humorous drawing, to caricature, on the one hand, and to avoid the always difficult and inevitable trap of repeating ideas. Mafalda's popularity and relevance continue, even though the comic strip featuring this character ended decades ago. Furthermore, it is associated with animated series and various derivative products.
Quino's work is very extensive, being published in the main languages. His CartoonsThese seemingly simple works portray, like few others, the unbelievable intricacies of bureaucracy, the ever-surprising human stupidity, the arrogance of the strong over the weak, among other celebrated themes that are recurrent in his work, marked by unparalleled humor and graphic style.
The author, who has a large number of books published in Portugal by Dom Quixote, Bertrand and Teorema, has already visited our country for meetings with Portuguese journalists and readers in 2001 and 2003.
He has received numerous awards, most notably: the Golden Palm Trophy at the Bordighera International Humor Salon (1978), "Cartoonist of the Year" worldwide (1982), the B'nai B'rith Human Rights Award (1998) and the Quevedos Prize for Graphic Humor (2001).
He was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award in the Communication and Humanities category in 2014.
