Uma das figuras mais românticas do seu tempo, autodidata e orador eloquente, foi também um homem dos mil ofícios: operário fabril na Califórnia, garimpeiro no Klondike e correspondente de guerra no Japão. Socialista convicto, aliou a sede de aventuras à fome de justiça social, e a coragem individual à defesa da solidariedade entre os homens.
