Albert Camus

PRÉMIO NOBEL DA LITERATURA 1957

Albert Camus nasceu em Mondovi, na Argélia, a 7 de novembro de 1913. Licenciado em Filosofia, participou na Resistência francesa durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial e foi então um dos fundadores do jornal de esquerda Combat. Em 1957 foi consagrado com o Prémio Nobel da Literatura pelo conjunto de uma obra que o afirmou como um dos grandes pensadores do século XX. Dos seus títulos ensaísticos destacam-se O Mito de Sísifo (1942) e O Homem Revoltado (1951); na ficção, são incontornáveis O Estrangeiro (1942), A Peste (1947) e A Queda (1956). A 4 de janeiro de 1960, Camus morreu num acidente de viação perto de Sens. Na sua mala levava inacabado o manuscrito de O Primeiro Homem, texto autobiográfico que viria a ser publicado em 1994.
