René Guénon (1886-1951), martinist, gnostic, esotericist and freemason, was one of the greatest interpreters of Tradition and esoteric and initiatory studies, even if he never claimed, in itself, no other function than that of having tried to expose, within the limits of ordinary language, the ideas conveyed in the symbolism, rituality and operational methodology of the "traditional forms", to be understood as ways of spiritual improvement of the being human.
In his writings, he tryed to hand down eastern religious traditions and adapt them to western readers "while keeping strictly faithful to their spirit".
Initiated into Islamic esotericism from as early as 1910 when he was 24, taking the name of Shaykh 'Abd al-Wahid Yahya, he mainly wrote and published in French, and his works have been translated into more than twenty languages.
The Guenon’s studyHermes, which we propose to our readers today, was published in April 1932 on the magazineLe Voile d’Isis. In it Guénon explores and interprets the mythical figure of Hermes Trismegistus and the meaning of the doctrines attributed to him over the centuries.

René Guénon

René Guénon (1886-1951) is one of the greatest figures in esotericism and sacred science. He was born in Blois, France, and died in Cairo, having converted to Islam. He left behind an absolutely fundamental body of work for all those interested in these fields. Among his most important works are... East and West (1924), Dante's Esotericism (1925), The Crisis of the Modern World (1927, Portuguese edition by Vega), The King of the World (1927), Autorité Spirituelle et Pouvoir Temporel (1929), The Symbolism of the Cross (1931) and Le Règne de la Quantité et les Signes des Temps (1945). Ananda Coomaraswamy referred to him in the following terms: "There is no author in contemporary Europe more important than René Guénon, whose task has been to expound the universal metaphysical tradition that has always been the essential foundation of all previous cultures, and which represents the indispensable basis for any civilization worthy of the name."
