The ingenious ways dilemmas are addressed in non-Western traditions

Dilemmas explores some of the most pressing existential problems of our times, from climate change, political conflict, and social injustice, to balancing one’s own needs against those of others. Pushing back against the tendency to think of dilemmas as clear-cut binary choices, renowned anthropologist Michael Jackson shows us some of the ingenious ways that dilemmas are addressed in non-Western thought and oral traditions, as well as in Western philosophy.

Drawing on examples from myth, literature, and his extensive ethnographic fieldwork in West Africa and Aboriginal Australia, each of thirteen chapters examines a particular dilemma and how it is experienced, circumvented, or reimagined. From the struggles of the Aboriginal people of Central Australia for land rights to Walter Benjamin’s harrowing journey across the Pyrenees as he fled German-occupied France in 1940; from the story of a suburban family in Aotearoa New Zealand adjusting to life in a commune to the dilemmas of migrants from the Global South trying to reconcile their search for a better life with their longing for home—Jackson interweaves philosophical reflections, insights from his anthropological fieldwork, and individual life stories.

In striking a balance between our contradictory impulses to be both apart from and together with others, Jackson makes a case against identitarian essentialism, showing us how the oppositional thinking through which we often frame our contemporary dilemmas may be overcome.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is widely recognized as one of the greatest artists in pop music history, known as the "King of Pop." With a career that spanned more than four decades, he left an indelible legacy as a singer, songwriter, dancer and producer. Born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, Michael began his musical career at a very young age, alongside his brothers, in the group The Jackson 5.

Michael Jackson began his musical career as the lead vocalist of The Jackson 5, a band formed by his older brothers. The group, which signed with Motown Records in 1968, quickly achieved success with hits such as "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save," and "I'll Be There." Michael's precocious talent, especially his charisma and vocal abilities, stood out, and he quickly emerged as the star of the group.

In 1971, Michael began his solo career while still with The Jackson 5. His first solo albums, such as Got to Be There (1972) and Ben (1972), were successful, but it was in the 1980s that he became a global superstar. The album Off the Wall (1979), produced by Quincy Jones, was a milestone in his career. With hits like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You," the album was a huge commercial and critical success, showing the beginning of Michael's transition from a child star to an adult star.

The success of Off the Wall was just the beginning. In 1982, Michael released Thriller, the album that would become the best-selling album of all time. Thriller is a true milestone in music history, with hits like "Billie Jean," "Beat It," and the title track "Thriller." The album not only dominated music charts around the world, but also redefined the concept of music videos. The music video for "Thriller," directed by John Landis, is a visual masterpiece and is often cited as one of the most influential music videos of all time.

In addition to commercial success, Thriller earned Michael Jackson numerous awards, including eight Grammy Awards in 1984, and solidified his status as the "King of Pop." His ability to combine pop, R&B, funk, and rock music, along with his stage presence and innovative dance style, have made him a unique figure in music.

Michael continued to dominate the music scene in the 1980s with the release of Bad (1987), which was also a huge success. The album spawned five No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," "Dirty Diana," and "I Just Can't Stop Loving You." Bad was accompanied by a massive world tour, which broke attendance records and further solidified his reputation as one of the biggest live acts.

In 1991, Michael released Dangerous, an album that continued his exploration of new musical styles, including elements of new jack swing. The album spawned hits such as "Black or White," "Remember the Time," and "Heal the World." Dangerous was yet another commercial success and was followed by another world tour that captivated audiences around the world.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Michael Jackson continued to release music and tour, although his personal life was marked by controversies and legal challenges. In 1995, he released HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, which included a compilation of his greatest hits and new tracks such as "Scream," a duet with his sister Janet Jackson, and "Earth Song," a powerful ambient ballad.

In 2001, Michael released Invincible, which would be his last studio album. While it did not achieve the same level of commercial success as their previous releases, the album was still well-received by fans and included hits such as "You Rock My World."

Michael Jackson is also remembered for his cultural impact beyond music. Her innovative dancing, including moves such as the "moonwalk," and her style of dress, have influenced generations of performers. He was also a dedicated philanthropist, supporting numerous humanitarian and charitable causes throughout his life.

Sadly, Michael Jackson's life was tragically cut short on June 25, 2009, when he passed away due to a drug overdose at his home in Los Angeles. His death shocked the world and led to a wave of tributes from fans and artists around the world.

Michael Jackson's legacy is immense. With over 350 million records sold worldwide, he remains one of the most iconic and influential figures in music history. His impact on music, dance, fashion, and pop culture is undeniable, and he continues to be revered as the "King of Pop."
