SYNOPSIS
Bradley Pearson, an unsuccessful novelist in his late fifties, has finally left his dull office job as an Inspector of Taxes. Bradley hopes to retire to the country, but predatory friends and relations dash his hopes of a peaceful retirement. He is tormented by his melancholic sister, who has decided to come live with him; his ex-wife, who has infuriating hopes of redeeming the past; her delinquent brother, who wants money and emotional confrontations; and Bradley''s friend and rival, Arnold Baffin, a younger, deplorably more successful author of commercial fiction. The ever-mounting action includes marital cross-purposes, seduction, suicide, abduction, romantic idylls, murder, and due process of law. Bradley tries to escape from it all but fails, leading to a violent climax and a coda that casts shifting perspectives on all that has preceded.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Iris Murdoch
Jean Iris Murdoch (Dublin, 15 de julho de 1919 - Oxford, 8 de fevereiro de 1999) foi uma filósofa irlandesa.
Estudou Literaturas Clássicas, História Antiga e Filosofia no Somerville College, e fez uma pós-graduação também em Filosofia. Foi membro ativo do Partido Comunista até se distanciar da ideologia. Trabalhou na U.N.N.R.A. e deu aulas no Royal College of Art.
A partir de 1963 dedicou-se à escrita, tendo produzido 26 romances em 40 anos, os últimos escritos já enquanto sofria de Alzheimer. Em todas as suas obras podem ser observadas discussões com os filósofos, tendo como inimigo o caráter fatalista que o pensamento existencialista desencadeou.
Escreveu romances, contos, ensaios, peças e poemas. Entre as suas obras mais célebres estão O Mar, o Mar, vencedor do Prémio Booker (1978), O Príncipe Negro, vencedor do Prémio James Tait Black Memorial Prize (1973) e Os Olhos da Aranha (1956).
Em 2008, foi nomeada na lista «50 maiores escritores britânicos desde 1945», do The Times.
