Joaquim Fernandes is the subject of a biography in Dictionary of Personalities from Porto in the 20th Century (Porto Editora). Co-founder of the Transdisciplinary Center for Consciousness Studies (CTEC) at Fernando Pessoa University, he holds a doctorate in History with the first thesis on extraterrestrial themes in Portugal. He is particularly interested in comparative religious anthropology, with an emphasis on the phenomena of popular religiosity and spirituality, myths and cosmologies, and the debate between science and religion.
He is a member of several international organizations and international coordinator of Project MARIAN, who studies the cultural and scientific dimensions of religious and apparitional phenomena, such as Fatima, a subject to which he dedicated several works, co-authored with Fina d’Armada, also translated into English, Spanish and French.
On television, he is one of the co-writers of the script for the television film. The Night of the End of the World, which portrays the reactions in Portugal to the approach of Halley's Comet in 1910. For RTP2, he coordinated the thematic series. Immediate Encounters, dedicated to the UFO phenomenon in Portugal. He was the author of the script and the presentation of the documentary. The Faces of Fatima, produced for the History Channel in 2017, and, at Porto Canal, coordinated the series Centennial Conversations dedicated to the apparitional events of Fatima.
With a vast body of published work, among his most recent titles are... The Prodigious History of Portugal. Myths & Wonders (2015), Unusual Portugal (2016) and, in the field of fiction, historical novels The Knight of Raven Island (2008) and The Chinese Healers: A rebellion that shook the First Republic. (2014).
