Mario Benedetti (1920-2009), a Uruguayan writer, is one of the leading authors of 20th-century South American literature, with an extensive body of work comprising more than fifty titles of poetry, novels, essays, and plays.
An intellectual actively involved in the problems of his country, he collaborated and held various positions in literary journalism. In 1971, he was appointed director of the Literature Department at the University of Montevideo; however, the 1973 military coup and his political convictions in a Latin America in full upheaval forced him into successive exiles: first in Argentina, then in Peru, where he was arrested and deported, successively to Cuba, and finally to Spain.
The publication, in 1960, of the novel The Truce It brings him enormous success: the book has over 100 editions and has been translated into 20 languages, with adaptations for theater, radio, and film.
