Walter Alvarez nasceu em 1940. É professor no departamento de Terra e Ciências Planetárias da Universidade de Berkeley, na Califórnia. Ficou conhecido pela teoria da extinção dos dinossauros pela queda de um meteorito que desenvolveu com o pai, o físico Luis Alvarez vencedor de um Prémio Nobel.
