É docente na Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e na Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa. Tem investigado e escrito sobre o trabalho de vários artistas e sobre temáticas da arte contemporânea, com especial incidência nas questões em torno das práticas e teorias da imagem. Foi coautor (com Pedro Macedo) da série documental Entre Imagens produzida para a RTP2. Foi o diretor artístico da Bienal LisboaPhoto, entre 2003 e 2005, e da PhotoEspaña, entre 2008 e 2010. Foi o comissário da Representação Oficial Portuguesa à 54ª Bienal de Arte de Veneza em 2011.
