Paleontóloga e ornitóloga com dezenas de livros publicados, em especial sobre paleontologia, e vencedora de vários prémios literários, entre os quais o Prémio Eureka em 1993 e 2000. Catedrática na Universidade Monash, em Melbourne, onde exerce funções desde 1976. Foi Vice-Presidente e Presidente da Associação Australiana de Paleontologistas entre 1992 e 1998. É diretora do Centro de Ciência na Universidade Monash e investigadora associada do Museu Victoria. Trabalhou ainda em vários museus e a sua obra é reconhecida pelos importantes estudos sobre animais pré-históricos, como os dinossauros, fósseis e espécies extintas
