Licenciado em História pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, Mário Augusto Madeira Matos e Lemos foi jornalista da Agência de Notícias e Informações (ANI), do Diário de Notícias e do Diário do Norte (1956-1972). Entre 1972 e 1998 desempenhou funções de conselheiro cultural e de imprensa em diversas embaixadas portuguesas. Foi diretor do Centro Cultural Português de Bissau e, fugazmente, diretor do CENJOR. Atualmente é investigador do CEIS 20, da Universidade de Coimbra.
