Manuel Recuero Astray é professor catedrático de História Medieval da Universidade da Corunha. No âmbito do seu trabalho de investigação destacam-se as suas contribuições para o estudo dos reinos hispânicos durante a Alta Idade Média e, especialmente, o reinado de Afonso VII e a ideia imperial leonesa. Também se destacam as suas contribuições para a História da Galiza, sobretudo a publicação de colecções documentais relativas a este reino. Entre os projectos de investigação em que participou ou dirigiu encontra-se um intitulado "Portugal y Castilla en la Edad Media: Documentos de Historia Peninsular (siglos XII-XV)", em colaboração com a Universidade Portucalense. Actualmente é o director do Departamento de Humanidades da Universidade da Corunha.
